My trip to the vet ..........

November 18, 2008

I've never done a "blog" before, but yesterday got me thinking...really thinking about things...and I thought hmmm, maybe I should write this stuff down. ;) yeah, I know...I'm a goofball...but here's my take on life, at least for yesterday anyway......
Yesterday as I'm driving home from work my husband calls and tells me that my dog(age 18 believe it or not) was limping pretty bad and has had two accidents close to her bed (that he stepped in-he was not happy), very unlike her. He said that he's already called the vet and I can come home and then take her right to the vet, they will work her in.
So I go home, grab my dog and her blanket place her in the car and off to the vet we go.
On my way to the vet, I pass a big yellow dog, probably a Golden Retriever, that had been hit by a car and was laying dead on the side of the road. I was saddened to think how he got on the road and what kind of family was now looking for him wondering what happened to him?
Funny thing is last week I was also taking my dog to the vet, then for just a check up, and in the very same area of road, I myself almost hit a large German Shepard like dog..as I slammed on my breaks swerving to the side of the road and stopped, the dog just stood in front of my car. I noticed on the other side of road a man had also pulled his car along side the road and had got out and was kneeling on the side of the road, apparently he was trying to catch this dog. I got out and had asked him if it was his dog. He said "no, I saw it wandering and was just trying to catch it, but it is too afraid to come near me". At that time I looked over and the dog had just taken off running into the woods and across the field. I said "well I hope he's going home." And the guy and I both got back in our cars. (I thought wow, how nice of that guy to stop...most guys wouldn't) I went on my way to the vet.
Very strange that two dogs were in traffic in the very same area one week apart....too bad the big yellow one wasn't as lucky.
So I arrived at the vet's office. I carried my dog in, checked in and sat down to wait.  Another big collie type, fluffy dog was laying on the floor across from us. A couple was with him, the woman holding his leash and the man holding her hand, sad looks on their faces. I noticed a tumor on the end of the dogs nose and also in it's nostrils it looked also like the tumor had grown down and was filling the poor dog's nose. The door to the exam rooms opened, the vet's assistant called the couple with the dog back. They led the dog through the door and had him stand on the weight scales, then the door closed.
A few minutes passed and another couple came in the door, with a big Black Lab, the poor dog fell and couldn't make it through the doorway, it had fell and couldn't get it's back legs up again. The man took the dog under the belly, struggling, carried it to the chairs, put the dog down on the floor and the dog just layed there panting.
This couple did not have happy faces either, the woman had tears in her eyes. I thought to myself, uh oh...this can't be good.
Quite a while passed and I looked up out the window to the parking lot. I saw the vet and her assistant walking by, looked like they were carrying something heavy, I could only see the upper half of them, because the window was high. And I thought,  wonder what they are carrying. Then I saw the man that was in with the first dog open a car door, just then the woman that was with him came walking by me with just a leash in her hand and she went out the door. Just then realized that the poor dog with the tumor in it's nose is what they carried to the car. There was a lump in my throat as I now knew why that dog was at the vet's office this day.
Then the vet's assistant came out and called the other couple and the black dog in, the man again had to carry the dog through the door and placed the dog on the scales right inside the door to get the dogs weight and then the door closed.
It was finally our turn, after my dog got weighed then we were put in the exam room to wait again. I faintly heard a woman crying from the next room and then the vet came into our room, she had a sad look on her face. That look confirmed what I had wondered, the fate that day was the same for the black dog too.
My dog had a pulled muscle and a urine infection, she got a cortizone shot and antibotics. I didn't feel so bad. My dog was lucky compared to the other two dogs and at her age, thankful that's all she had wrong.
As I was driving home, all I could think about was all those dogs that died that day. Two were lucky to have their family with them. The dog on the road wasn't so lucky. Then I thought I was glad to see both the man and woman at the office with both those dogs. Too often I hear of the wife saying, my husband took the dog to the vet today, I just couldn't bear to be there. But yet that was their beloved dog, the dog needed her for her love and support on it's final day -she couldn't do it? (Could she bear to be there if it was her child?) Odd how some people only think of themselves, not what the animal would feel more comfortable with.
Then I jumped to the thought, if the vet's assistant knew why those dogs were there that day(they usually know), why did she need to weigh them?? Very strange. I also thought, the people should have had the vet come out to the car, that way the dog would feel more comfortable instead of being all nervous an scared as all dogs get inside the vets office. (plus they wouldn't need to carry the dog out again)  Why would you want to stress your dog out going in the office, when it was his final day? (Vet's will do that, if you ask.)
I then realized that 3 dogs, that I saw on that day, died.  3  I wonder if death really does happen in 3's?
That day it did.
